1217WarmUp

Data storage has been growing exponentially over the past decade. Look up the following capacities on the Internet:

byte
kilobyte
megabyte
gigabyte
terabyte
petabyte
exabyte
zettabyte
yottabyte.

How big are they?

Give me an example of what can be stored with each capacity, i.e. Blueray holds 500 GB of data.

  6. -Byte:
On almost all modern computers, a byte is equal to 8 bits.
    -kilobyte:
Technically, therefore, a kilobyte is 1,024 bytes, but it is often used loosely as a
    synonym for 1,000 bytes.
    -megabyte:
When used to describe data storage, 1,048,576 (2 to the 20th power) bytes.
Megabyte is frequently abbreviated as M or MB.
    -gigabyte:
One gigabyte is equal to 1,024 megabytes. Gigabyte is often abbreviated as G or GB.
    -terabyte:
This is approximately 1 trillion bytes. Terabyte is abbreviated as TB.
    -petabyte:
A petabyte is equal to 1,024 terabytes. Petabyte is abbreviated as PB.
    -exabyte:
An exabyte is equal to 1,024 petabytes.
    -zettabyte:
(1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000) bytes. A zettabyte is equal to 1,024 exabytes.
    -yottabyte:
1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000) bytes. A yottabyte is equal to 1,024 zettabytes.

  13. Byte- is a basic unit of measurement of information storage in computer science.

Kilobyte- meaning 1,000) is a unit of digital information storage equal
to either 1,024 bytes (210) or 1,000 bytes (103), depending on context.

Megabyte- a unit of information or computer storage equal to either
    106 (1,000,000) bytes or 220

Gigabyte-a SI-multiple of the unit byte for digital information storage.

Terabyte-a measurement term for data storage capacity.

Petabyte-a unit of information or computer storage equal to one quadrillion bytes,
    or 1024 terabytes.

Zettabyte-a unit of information or computer storage equal
to one sextillion (one long scale trilliard) bytes.

Yottabyte-a unit of information or computer storage equal to one septillion
(one long scale quadrillion or 1024) bytes
